Pentecost is the season where all of God’s children come together again. These are the same descendants of the Children of God who were so eager to become God that they built a huge tower known as the Tower of Babel. God’s children believed they could become like God, become as powerful as God, and could become a god. Brick by brick the power and God desiring people came together to build. The industry was uniting as the god desiring people put their free time and energy into working together to build their tower in order to deconstruct God.
As surprising as it may seem, working together for an evil interest can be as uniting as working together toward a sacred interest. These early Children of God were determined, believing they could accomplish their task. Somehow, they believed God could not see them coming. Their deceit had entered their own twisted desires and the outcome was that the original Children of God were divided into different languages, nations, bordered regions, and sectarian desires. God’s people were divided and God was the divider.
But at Pentecost, God became the uniting God. The divided Children of God came together and language was restored, community was expected, relationships were refreshing, and the Children of God had become one People of God. Pentecost unites us under the gift of the Holy Spirit, literally God in the Spirit. The creation, the sacrifice of Jesus, and the advocacy of the Holy Spirit broke down all that divided us and united us in the name of a Savior, Christ the Lord!
