“He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.” Isaiah 40:11.
One of my favorite parts of the Advent season is bringing out the little nativity scene that we bought for our children when they were young. We wanted them to have figures that they could play with, unbreakable and small enough for them to handle. Among the figures is a shepherd. He has a young lamb that he is carrying draped across his shoulders. The prophet Isaiah describes God as a shepherd who cares for his sheep. The nativity scenes that we see this season can remind us through the presence of sheep and a shepherd that we worship a God who in Christ holds us as his lambs close to his heart and who gently guides and leads his sheep in the path of life.
Shepherd God, thank-you for the gift of love with which you came to earth in Jesus. Through him we come to know you better. As a shepherd cares for his flock, so you care for your lambs. Fill me with your grace that I would open my heart to receive your love and be transformed into the disciple you call me to be. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
